Australia's best restaurants are on the water, and getting to them has always been the hard part. You find the place, you phone for a table, you get a time, and then you start the second job: working out how you actually arrive. A cab to a wharf. A ferry that stops running before dessert. A designated driver who spends the night on soda water while everyone else has the good bottle.
We have now collapsed that into one request. On any waterfront venue page on Water Taxis Australia you send one form that covers the table and the boat. We ask the restaurant first. Only when the restaurant says yes do we lock in the water taxi.
As far as we know, nobody else in Australia does this. Here is exactly how it works.
The short version
- Pick a venue from the directory, or land on its page from Google.
- Enter the table details β date, time, party size, name, mobile, email β and your pickup point for the boat.
- We send the table request to the venue. They confirm or decline with one tap.
- Table confirmed: we lock in the water taxi, timed so you arrive before your reservation.
- Table declined: you get an SMS and email, nothing proceeds, nothing is charged.
That order matters, and it is the whole idea. A boat booking without a table is a wasted trip. A table without a boat is a logistics problem. Doing them in the wrong order is how people end up cancelling one of the two.
Why table-first, and not boat-first
Every other version of this is worse.
If we booked the boat first and the venue turned out to be full, you would be sitting on a confirmed transfer to a restaurant that cannot seat you β and we would be issuing a refund for a booking that should never have existed. Refunds are not a substitute for getting it right.
If we booked them simultaneously, you would be holding two live commitments, each of which could fall over independently. That is two things to chase instead of none.
Table-first means there is exactly one decision point, and it belongs to the venue. Until they answer, you owe nothing and you have nothing to cancel.
How the venue answers
When your request goes in, the venue's reservations team gets an SMS and an email with the details: date, time, party size, your name, and a note that the party is arriving by water. That last part matters more than people realise β it changes how a venue plans your table, because a boat arrival is a firm arrival with a firm return leg, not a group that might drift in twenty minutes late.
They confirm or decline with a single tap. No login, nothing to install, no app.
Venues that want more control use the venue portal: they can block out dates, functions and closures, sync their existing reservations calendar, see every request with full history, and publish specials to our guest list. If a venue runs SevenRooms, OpenTable, Now Book It, ResDiary or Quandoo, we are actively connecting to those diaries so confirmed bookings drop straight in.
Then the boat gets timed properly
This is the part that quietly does the most work.
You do not have to guess a departure time. You give us the reservation time β 7:30 pm at Ormeggio, say β and the engine works backwards from the venue's jetty:
- run time from your pickup wharf, pontoon or canal berth to the venue landing
- boarding time at your end
- a buffer for tide, traffic on the water and weather
- a landing target a few minutes before the table, not after
So you get a pickup time that lands you on the jetty with time to walk in, not a transfer that arrives while your table is being given away.
The return leg gets booked at the same time. A timed pick-up costs far less than a boat idling through a three-hour dinner, and there is a 15-minute grace window before waiting time applies at $5 per minute.
What it costs
Nothing extra for the table. No booking fee, no per-head charge, and we take no commission on your food and beverage. You pay the venue directly for what you eat and drink, exactly as if you had phoned them.
The only thing you pay us for is the boat, and water taxi fares are quoted per boat, not per person. A finished fare on our site already includes the operator's rate, GST, our commission, the platform fee and the card surcharge. There is no second number at the end.
Split across a table of eight, a Sydney Harbour transfer is usually less than each person would spend on parking and a cab.
We don't charge your card today
This is worth stating flatly, because the way most booking sites handle it is genuinely unpleasant.
We do not charge your card on the day you book. Your card is verified with a A$0 hold, nothing more. The fare is charged when a water taxi operator accepts your job β or three days before pickup for bookings made well in advance.
So if a table falls through, or nobody can run your slot, there is nothing to refund because nothing was taken. If a refund ever is due, it defaults to wallet credit and you can cash it out to your original card whenever you like from your wallet.
Where you can do this right now
27 waterfront venues are live across three states, and every one of them is reachable by a licensed commercial operator we actually dispatch.
Sydney Harbour
Doyles on the Beach at Watsons Bay, Catalina Rose Bay, Ormeggio at The Spit, The Boathouse Balmoral, Hugos Manly, Ripples Milsons Point, and Opera Bar at the Opera House β walk-in only, so we book you the boat and you stroll straight in.
Pittwater and the northern beaches
Jonah's Whale Beach, The Boathouse Palm Beach, Pasadena and The Marina CafΓ© at Church Point.
Hawkesbury River and Cowan Creek
Cottage Point Inn, Cottage Point Kiosk, Peats Bite at Sunny Corner, and Berowra Waters Inn.
Central Coast and Broken Bay
The Boathouse Hotel Patonga, plus Tutti by Chillis, The BOX on the Water and Amalfi at Ettalong Beach β daytime runs only, 11:30 am to 4:00 pm, because that is when boats safely work those waters.
Gold Coast
MΔRE at Marina Mirage, Omeros Bros, Glass Dining & Lounge Bar and The Jetty at Surfers Pavilion β all on the Broadwater and the Nerang River, all with pontoon access.
Queensland islands and the Whitsundays
Little Ship Club at Dunwich on North Stradbroke Island, and Sorrento Restaurant & Bar at Port of Airlie in the Whitsundays β daylight island runs only.
Tasmania
Peppermint Bay Hotel at Woodbridge on the D'Entrecasteaux Channel.
What we will not do
We will not list a venue we cannot actually get you to. A venue only goes live once an active, licensed commercial operator genuinely services its waterway. We have held perfectly good restaurants off the directory for exactly this reason, and we will keep doing it. A listing that cannot be serviced is not a listing, it is a trap.
We also will not quote a run that crosses waterways that boats do not cross. Sydney Harbour trips stay on Sydney Harbour; Pittwater trips stay on Pittwater. If you ask for something that does not exist, the engine tells you straight away instead of taking your money and working it out later.
More venues are coming, weekly
The directory is being built out continuously β searchable by state and region, with each venue's own photographs, menus, specials and jetty notes loaded by the venue itself through its portal.
Priorities for the coming weeks: more Hawkesbury and Central Coast venues, the northern Gold Coast marina precincts, additional Whitsundays island dining, and Moreton Bay. Every one of them waits on the same test β can a real operator get you there.
Book it
Start at the venue directory, search by state or region, and open the venue you want. The booking panel on that page is already locked to that venue's jetty, so you only choose the time, the party and your pickup point.
Or go straight to the booking engine if you already know where you are eating.
Hours: 6:00 am to 10:00 pm, seven days. Same-day bookings close at 9:00 pm β after that, use Book Later for tomorrow.

Questions we hear a lot
Can Water Taxis Australia book my restaurant table as well as the boat?+
Yes. On any venue page you send one request that contains both the table details and the boat details. We pass the table request to the venue, and only once the venue confirms the table do we lock in the water taxi. If the venue cannot seat you, nothing goes ahead and you are not charged.
Does the table booking cost extra?+
No. There is no booking fee for the table, and we never take a commission on your food and beverage. You pay the venue directly for whatever you eat and drink, exactly as if you had phoned them yourself.
When is my card charged?+
We don't charge your card on the day you book. Your card is verified only, with a A$0 hold. The fare is charged once a water taxi operator accepts the job β or three days before pickup for bookings made well in advance.
How long does the venue take to confirm a table?+
Most venues answer inside an hour during service hours, because confirming is one tap on a link we send by SMS and email. Overnight requests are usually answered the next morning. You get an SMS and email the moment the answer comes through, either way.
What happens if the restaurant declines?+
You get an SMS and email telling you plainly that the venue cannot seat you at that time or date, and that the water taxi booking will not proceed. Nothing is charged. You can pick a different time or a different venue and send a fresh request in under a minute.
How do you know what time the boat should pick us up?+
You give us the reservation time and we work backwards. The engine estimates the run time from your pickup point to the venue's jetty, adds a buffer for boarding and tide, and sets a departure time so you land before your table is called β not fifteen minutes after it.
Which venues can I actually book?+
27 waterfront venues are live across New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania, from Doyles at Watsons Bay and Cottage Point Inn to MΔRE at Marina Mirage, Little Ship Club on North Stradbroke and Peppermint Bay in Tasmania. More are added every week.
Do you list venues you cannot actually reach by boat?+
No. A venue only goes live once an active, licensed commercial operator genuinely services its waterway. If nobody can get you there, the venue stays off the directory β we would rather show you fewer venues than sell you a run that does not exist.
Ready to lock in your trip on the water?
Live fare, instant confirmation, one clean receipt. If the operator can't cover your slot we issue an automatic full refund β no phone calls, no forms.
