How Do You Book a Water Taxi? A Step-by-Step Guide for Australia

Booking a water taxi used to mean ringing three operators, leaving two voicemails and hoping somebody had a boat free. It does not work that way anymore. This guide walks through exactly how to book a water taxi in Australia, what information you need before you start, how far ahead to book, and what happens between paying and stepping onto the boat.

Before you start: the five things you need

Have these ready and the whole booking takes under a minute:

1. Your pickup point. A wharf name is best — Circular Quay, Rose Bay Wharf, Watsons Bay Wharf, Manly Wharf, Marina Mirage. A private jetty, hotel pontoon or restaurant berth works too; drop the pin.
2. Your drop-off point. Same rule. Name the wharf, not just the suburb.
3. Date and time. Service hours are 6:00am to 10:00pm as standard.
4. Passenger count. This decides the vessel size dispatched. Include children.
5. A mobile number. The skipper texts or calls you on approach, and your boarding pass goes to that number.

Optional but useful: luggage volume, prams, surfboards, wheelchairs or limited mobility, pets, and whether you also want the return leg booked at the same time.

Step 1 — Enter your trip

Open the booking engine on the home page. Type the pickup into the first field. Wharves rank first in the suggestions because that is where boats actually berth, with suburbs listed underneath for overseas visitors who do not know the wharf names yet. Do the same for the drop-off. A mini map draws the route as soon as both ends are set, so you can sanity-check that the boat is going where you think.

Step 2 — Pick the right mode

There are three modes and choosing correctly saves you money:

• Water taxi — a point-to-point transfer, priced per boat. The right choice for getting from A to B.
• Water limousine — the same idea in a premium vessel with leather seating, climate control and champagne service. Priced hourly, from a higher first-hour rate.
• Charter boat — an hourly hire with a minimum booking period, catering options and food and drink menus. The right choice for events, birthdays, sunset cruises and corporate days.

Step 3 — Check the fare

The quote shown is the all-inclusive fare: the boat, the licensed master, fuel, GST, insurance and platform fees. There is no wharf-side payment, no fuel levy and no per-person add-on.

What can change it:

• After hours (10:00pm–6:00am) — a flat after-hours surcharge.
• NSW public holidays — a flat public holiday surcharge.
• Waiting time — a 15-minute grace period from your booked time, then a per-minute waiting charge to the card on file. This is why arriving 15 minutes early matters.

Step 4 — Book Now or Book Later

Book Now is for immediate and same-day pickups within service hours. The job is dispatched instantly and you usually have a confirmed skipper within minutes.

Book Later is required for anything after 9:00pm on the same day and for every next-day or future booking. It gives operators time to roster a skipper, fuel the vessel and confirm properly rather than declining at 11:00pm.

Step 5 — Pay and get your boarding pass

Payment is by card through Stripe. The instant it clears, the job is broadcast by SMS and app alert to every licensed operator covering that stretch of water — not to one company's dispatcher. The first operator to accept takes the job, and their details are released to you.

You then receive, by email and SMS:

• A QR boarding pass the skipper scans at the wharf
• The vessel name and the skipper's mobile number
• A live map pin of the exact pickup berth
• Your all-inclusive fare and booking reference

Save the SMS link. It opens the same ticket on your phone with the map live, which is far easier than digging through email at a windy wharf.

How far ahead should you book?

• Weekday, off-peak, inside service hours — same day is fine, often within 15 minutes.
• Weekend daytime — book the morning of, or the night before, especially in summer.
• Weekend evening, long weekends, school holidays — 48 hours ahead.
• New Year's Eve, Vivid Sydney, Boxing Day, major regattas and grand finals — weeks ahead. NYE in particular sells the Sydney fleet out by early December.
• Weddings and airport or cruise-terminal transfers — as soon as you have the date. These have zero schedule flexibility, so lock the boat in.

Getting a boat at short notice

If you need one now: choose Book Now, keep the passenger count accurate, and be flexible about the berth. A pickup from a busy public wharf like Circular Quay Jetty 6 or King Street Wharf is far easier to fill at short notice than a private jetty an operator has never berthed at. If no operator accepts, you are not charged.

Changing or cancelling

Cancellation terms differ between water taxis and charters — charters commit an operator's whole day, so their windows are longer. Refunds default to wallet credit by design, which is instant and reusable, and you can cash the balance out to your original card from your wallet page whenever you like. To change a booking, contact us with your reference rather than cancelling and rebooking — a time or wharf change can usually be passed to the same operator without touching the fare.

Booking for someone else

Very common for PAs, wedding planners and hotel concierges. Put the passenger's mobile number in the contact field so the boarding pass and skipper contact go to the person actually boarding, and pay on your own card. Add a note with the passenger's name so the skipper greets the right group at the wharf.

Group and multi-boat bookings

Above 12 passengers you are into either a larger single vessel or a shuttle of multiple boats.
