Water taxi
A water taxi is a licensed commercial vessel you hire privately, on demand, to travel directly between two points. It is the marine equivalent of a rideshare and it is priced the same way people wish rideshares were priced: per boat, not per person.
Typical Sydney Harbour fares for up to 12 passengers: from $120 for a short inner-harbour hop such as Circular Quay to Darling Harbour, around $220 to Watsons Bay and around $290 to Manly. Service hours run 6:00am to 10:00pm, with an after-hours surcharge outside that.
Best for: airport and cruise-terminal transfers, restaurant arrivals, commuting, island and offshore-community access, wedding guest shuttles, and getting home when the last ferry has gone.
Not for: sitting on the harbour for three hours drinking champagne. The waiting-time meter makes that expensive.
Water limousine
A water limousine is the premium end of the same idea. It is still a private, point-to-point service with a licensed master, but the vessel is a different class: leather or upholstered seating, enclosed climate-controlled cabin, a fridge, glassware, sound system and often champagne on arrival.
Pricing is hourly rather than flat — typically from around $650 for the first hour and about $450 per hour after that in Sydney. Because you are paying for time rather than distance, the limousine is also the right product when you want the boat to *wait* for you: a photo stop at Fort Denison, a 40-minute pause while a bridal party shoots on a beach, a slow scenic run instead of the fastest line.
Best for: bridal parties, proposals, anniversaries, VIP and executive transfers, arrivals where the boat itself is part of the impression, and any trip where you want to linger.
Not for: budget transfers. If nobody will notice the leather, book the taxi.
Charter boat
A charter boat is hired for an experience, not a transfer. You take the vessel, the skipper and the crew for a block of hours and use the harbour as a venue. Catering and beverage packages, cruising routes, swim stops and music are all part of the booking.
Pricing is hourly with a minimum: from about $690 per hour for a small premium vessel up to $2,000+ per hour for large luxury boats, with a three-hour minimum midweek and four hours on peak nights. Best for: birthdays, hens and bucks parties, corporate client days and Christmas parties, engagements, sunset and dinner cruises, NYE, Vivid and Australia Day.
Not for: moving people. A charter minimum to cross the harbour is a very expensive taxi.
