The Pittwater restaurants worth taking a boat to
The Boathouse Palm Beach
Governor Phillip Park, on the Pittwater side of the isthmus. Breezy, white, loud in the best way, and about ninety seconds' walk from Palm Beach Wharf, which is the busiest public pontoon on the estuary. This is the easiest arrival on Pittwater and the one most groups book. Go early for the deck, and book the return leg before you sit down.
Barrenjoey House
Directly opposite Palm Beach Wharf on Barrenjoey Road. Same landing, thirty seconds further, and a completely different mood — verandah, white timber, long lunches that quietly become dinner. It handles bigger group bookings well, which makes it the pick when there are ten or twelve of you arriving on one boat.
The Pasadena, Church Point
The Pasadena sits right on the water beside Church Point wharf and is the single best argument for arriving by boat, because parking at Church Point is genuinely awful and the ferry wharf pontoon is metres from the door. Sunset over the Scotland Island moorings from that deck is the picture people come for.
Church Point Waterfront Store & Cafe
The unfussy option at the same wharf: coffee, fish and chips, a table by the water and no dress code. Perfect as the front half of a day — cafe at Church Point, cruise up to Coasters Retreat, return leg late afternoon.
The Newport
A vast waterfront beer garden on Kalinya Street with jetty access on the Pittwater side. It is built for groups and it is one of the few venues on the estuary that can absorb a boatload of twelve at short notice. Skippers land at the closest legal jetty and it is a short walk in.
Royal Motor Yacht Club Broken Bay, Newport
Prince Alfred Parade, with proper marina berthing and a dining room that most non-members do not realise is open to guests. Steady, generous, water on three sides. A good wet-weather answer when the open decks are unusable.
Patonga Beach Hotel
Across Broken Bay on the Central Coast side, and the classic long lunch run out of Palm Beach. Beachfront pub, sand, prawns, and a boat trip that is worth doing purely for the ride. Check the afternoon nor'easter with your skipper — the return leg can be lumpy after 3:00 pm in summer.
Jonah's Whale Beach and Halyards-style hillside venues
Worth naming for completeness: Jonah's at Whale Beach is not water-accessible from Pittwater. Boats land at Palm Beach and it is a short car transfer over the hill. Anything above the waterline on the ocean side works the same way — boat to the wharf, car for the last kilometre.

How to plan a Pittwater lunch by boat
- Reserve the table first, and tell the venue you are arriving by water. Some jetties are guest-only and the restaurant will say so.
- Book the drop-off for 15 minutes before your booking. Boats are quick, walkways are not.
- Book the return leg at the same time. A pre-booked pick-up costs less than a boat waiting on the clock, and it guarantees you are not stranded at Church Point at 9:00 pm.
- Allow a buffer at the end. There is a 15-minute grace window on pick-ups; after that waiting time is $5 per minute.
- Check the wind, not the forecast temperature. A 20-knot southerly changes which side of the estuary is comfortable, and your skipper will suggest an alternative landing rather than a rough one.
Weather, tides and the things that catch people out
Pittwater is sheltered compared with the ocean, but the afternoon sea breeze funnels straight up the estuary from about 1:00 pm through summer. Two practical consequences: the run back to Palm Beach from Church Point can be wet across the top of the tide, and low tide restricts some shallow private jetties in the western bays.
