How Do I Get to Whitehaven Beach by Water Taxi?

Whitehaven Beach is the seven-kilometre stretch of pure silica sand on the eastern side of Whitsunday Island. There's no road in, no resort on it, and no scheduled ferry to it — the only way to get there is by boat. Here's how to reach it by private water taxi or charter.

Where the boat leaves from

Four departure points serve Whitehaven:

• Port of Airlie (Airlie Beach main terminal).
• Coral Sea Marina (Airlie Beach north).
• Abell Point Marina (Airlie Beach south).
• Hamilton Island Marina (if you're already on Hamilton).

How long does it take?

• Airlie Beach → Whitehaven — 45–60 minutes each way in a fast catamaran, longer in a mono-hull sailing yacht.
• Hamilton Island → Whitehaven — around 30 minutes.

Plan a full day. Rushing Whitehaven wastes it — you want time for Hill Inlet, a snorkel at Betty's Beach, a swim, lunch and photos.

What to bring

• Stinger suit (compulsory Oct–May in tropical waters). Most operators supply them.
• Reef-safe sunscreen.
• Hat, sunglasses and a light long-sleeve top.
• Refillable water bottle.
• GoPro or phone in a dry bag.
• Cash-free — everything on board is card.

Tips for a better trip

• Go early. The 7:30am departures beat the crowds to Hill Inlet's lookout.
• Book the low tide side of Hill Inlet. The sand swirls are most photogenic at low tide — ask the operator to time your visit.
• Combine with a scenic flight. Several operators bundle a Whitehaven boat day with a scenic seaplane return — worth every dollar.
• Overnight camping. Whitehaven has permit-only camping at Whitehaven South, Chance Bay and Joe's Beach — operators will drop and collect with a set return date.
