Circular Quay is the busiest water taxi pick-up point in Australia. It is also the most confusing one, because the ferry wharves, the cruise terminal and the water taxi pontoons all sit within two hundred metres of each other and none of it is signposted the way a first-timer expects.
This guide fixes that: exactly where to stand, how long each run takes, what it costs, and how to have a boat waiting when you get there.
Where water taxis actually pick up at Circular Quay
There are five usable pick-up points around the Quay. Your booking confirmation names the one your skipper is using, and the map on your boarding pass drops a pin on it.
1. The MCA-side pontoon (the main one). West of Wharf 5, directly in front of the Museum of Contemporary Art on the Rocks side of the Quay. This is the default water taxi pontoon, it is a floating pontoon rather than steps, and it is the easiest boarding point if you have luggage, kids or anyone unsteady on their feet. Walk to the MCA, turn to the water, walk down the ramp.
2. The Eastern Pontoon. Past Wharf 6 toward the Opera House side. Used when the MCA pontoon is congested and for pick-ups from the Quay East promenade, the Sydney Harbour Marriott and the Pullman Quay Grand end.
3. Man o' War Steps, Opera House. The stone steps on the eastern side of the Opera House forecourt. This is the collection point for anyone coming out of a performance, a Bennelong booking or an Opera Bar function. Same short-hop tariff as the Quay.
4. Campbells Cove, The Rocks. In front of the Park Hyatt, beside the Campbells Stores restaurants. The quiet one - good on a busy Saturday when the Quay is heaving.
5. Ives Steps, The Rocks. Beside Pier One and the Walsh Bay wharves. Handy for anyone staying at Pier One or coming out of a Walsh Bay theatre.
Whichever point you use, the fare from Circular Quay is the same. Pick the one closest to where you are standing.

How long you will wait
For a confirmed daytime booking in the CBD basin, a boat is typically alongside within 15 to 30 minutes. The Quay is where most of the fleet idles between jobs, so it is the fastest pick-up point on the harbour.
Times to plan around:
- Weekday mornings, 7:00-9:30 am - corporate transfers to Barangaroo and Rose Bay. Book the night before.
- Friday and Saturday 6:00-9:00 pm - restaurant runs to Rose Bay, Watsons Bay and The Spit. Book ahead.
- Vivid (late May to mid June) - the harbour is at capacity every night. Book days ahead.
- December - Christmas party season, then Boxing Day and New Year's Eve on fixed packages. Book weeks ahead.
- Cruise ship days at the Overseas Passenger Terminal - the western side of the Quay gets crowded; use Campbells Cove.
Getting to the Quay
- Train - Circular Quay station sits directly above the ferry wharves. Two minutes to the MCA pontoon.
- Light rail - the L2 and L3 terminate at Circular Quay.
- Bus - Alfred St stops directly behind the wharves.
- Car - the Rocks car parks on Harrington and Kendall Lane, or the Opera House car park for the Man o' War Steps pick-up. Drop-off on Alfred St is workable outside peak.
What to expect when the boat arrives
The skipper comes alongside, takes your bags, and helps everyone step aboard. Your QR boarding pass is scanned or your name checked against the manifest. A short safety brief, and you are away.
Practical notes:
- Be on the pontoon at the booked time. 15 minutes of waiting is free; after that it is $5 per minute charged to the card on file.
- Luggage - one suitcase plus a hand bag per passenger free, $25 per oversized item, declared at booking.
- Extra cruise time - want the run past the Opera House and under the Bridge on the way to Rose Bay? Add cruise minutes at booking; it is charged by the minute and is the best-value sightseeing on the harbour.
- Return legs - add the return at booking and the operator holds the slot rather than you scrambling for a boat at 10:30 pm.
Circular Quay to Manly, Rose Bay or Darling Harbour - which is worth it?
To Darling Harbour ($145, 10 min): worth it every time for a group. Walking is 25 minutes and two taxis cost nearly the same in traffic.
To Rose Bay ($239, 10 min): the Catalina run. The ferry takes 25 minutes and drops you at the public wharf; the water taxi puts you at the restaurant pontoon.
To Watsons Bay ($257, 15 min): faster than the ferry, and it runs long after the last useful ferry has gone. Doyles at sunset and a boat home at 9:30 pm is a better night out than the road version.
To Manly ($397, 25 min): a lot for two people. For eight it is $50 each, door to door, with luggage, on your schedule, on a Saturday night when the wharf queue is thirty deep.
To Taronga Zoo ($169, 10 min): the sleeper. Beats the ferry timetable, drops right at the zoo wharf, and for a family with a pram it is a genuinely easier morning.
